WHAT DOES BAREFOOT SHOES FOR RUNNING MEAN?

New to barefoot shoes. We live in Montana in which it will get to -20 or reduced. Any solutions on boots? Am I correct in thinking you'd need the thick boot to guard from the acute chilly?
